What is Place Value?

Tens are groups of ten ones. If you gather 10 blocks, tie them together with a ribbon: that’s a ‘ten bundle’.
For young kids, we start with two places
The ones place, which tells how many single items there are.
The tens place, which tells how many groups of ten.
This is how we make sense of numbers larger than 9.
For example, in the number 24,
The 2 stands for two tens (which is 20)
The 4 stands for four ones
Instead of seeing two separate digits, we help kids see that numbers are made of parts and that’s where the learning becomes meaningful.
