It was a slow Saturday morning. Mumma and Noah were in the kitchen, baking muffins. They had three trays to fill, and each tray needed two rows of three muffins.

Noah started counting. He said, ‘Let us do two times three first. That is six muffins per tray. And we have three trays, so six times three is eighteen.’

(2 × 3) × 3

6 × 3 =18

Mumma smiled. ‘Or we could do three times three first. That is nine rows. Then two muffins in each row make eighteen again.’

2 (3 x 3)

2 × 9 = 18

Noah paused, then smiled. ‘It’s the same.’

That moment is the Associative Property in action. It shows that when you multiply three numbers, it does not matter which two you group first. The total stays the same.

(2 × 3) × 3 = 2 × (3 × 3)

6 × 3 = 2 × 9

18  = 18

But in real life, it’s just a muffin moment. And that is where learning begins. With something your kid can see, touch and talk about.
