Making Fractions Friendly :
Teaching Proper, Improper and Mixed Fractions with the 3H Approach

Fractions often feel like one of those tricky topics in maths. Parents tell us that their children can manage halves and quarters, but when the words proper, improper and mixed fractions appear, confidence quickly fades. The truth is, fractions are everywhere in daily life, and with the right approach, they can be made simple and even enjoyable. That is where our 3H approach—Heart, Hand, and Head—comes in.

HEART : Learning Through Stories

Imagine a family tea-time. Mum cuts a cake into eight slices. Her son, Aarav, eats three slices. His sister, Meera, eats nine slices (she sneaks an extra from the second cake). Mum laughs and says, “Aarav has eaten a proper fraction of the cake, but Meera has eaten an improper fraction because she had more than one whole cake. And if we say she ate one whole cake and one slice from the next, that is a mixed fraction.”

This everyday moment makes fractions relatable. Children see that fractions are not just numbers on a page, but part of their world—cakes, pizzas, chocolate bars, and sharing. That emotional connection is the Heart of learning.

HAND : An Activity That Engages

Children learn best when they can touch and see. Here is a simple activity you can try at home:

The Pizza Fraction Game

Materials: Paper plates or cardboard circles, scissors, and markers.

  1. Cut a paper plate into equal slices (say 8).
  2. Ask your child to colour in 3 slices. Explain: “That is 3/8, a proper fraction because the top number is smaller than the bottom.”
  3. Now colour in 9 slices using two plates. Explain: “That is 9/8, an improper fraction because the top number is bigger than the bottom.”
  4. Finally, show that 9/8 can also be written as 1 whole plate and 1/8 of another. That is a mixed fraction.

This hands-on activity helps children see the difference between proper, improper, and mixed fractions. It is not abstract—it is tangible. That is the Hand of learning.

HEAD : Worksheets That Deepen Understanding

Once children have felt and seen the concept, it is time to stretch their thinking. Our Fractions Worksheets are designed to reinforce learning through structured practice:

  • Step-by-step exercises to identify proper, improper, and mixed fractions.
  • Visual puzzles where children shade parts of shapes to represent fractions.
  • Word problems such as “Sam ate 11 slices of pizza cut into 8 equal pieces. Write this as a proper fraction, an improper fraction, and a mixed fraction.”
  • Challenge zones where children convert between improper and mixed fractions.

These worksheets encourage children to reason, calculate, and explain their answers. That is the Head of learning.

Why Parents Love the 3H Approach

Parents often tell us that maths feels less intimidating when it is connected to real life. One father shared, “My daughter used to memorise fraction rules without understanding. After we tried the pizza activity, she explained improper fractions to me using her lunchbox sandwiches.”

The 3H approach—Heart, Hand, Head—turns abstract maths into meaningful experiences. It builds confidence, curiosity, and a genuine love for learning.
